5 Highlights of the Botanic Gardens Christmas Market

The Botanic Gardens Christmas Market has always been one of our favourite events in Dublin over the years, even before we started our catering business. At any time of the year the Gardens are worth a wander but during the festive season there is something magical about this Victorian era gem in the heart of Dublin.

We have been invited to the Gardens for their Christmas Market since 2016. It’s an event that we always look forward to.We spent two days cooking fresh crepes and churros for the crowd of happy shoppers but this year we also made sure we explored the market to see what was going on.

1. The Glasshouses

The Botanic Gardens Christmas Market has to be one of the most beautiful locations in Dublin. This is because of the stunning glasshouses that welcome visitors once they walk through the main gates.

We were located right at the end of the Orchid House which juts out from the Great Palm House. Behind us, through the glass windows we could see Venus Fly Traps and other exotic pitcher plants as the smell of our cinnamon churros attracted long lines of hungry shoppers.

2. The Squirrels

It’s impossible to count the squirrels in the Botanic Gardens. They pop up everywhere – on the trees, in the underbrush and across the lawns. They are not shy either. All weekend we watched them scuttling around the tree-lined paths hustling for food from the visitors.

Don’t worry, we made sure not to feed them as these are the invasive Grey Squirrels that do so much damage to our native Red Squirrels.

3. Lots of Art

There were over 35 stalls selling everything from hand sanitiser to sculptures selling their wares this year at the Christmas Market. If art is your thing, this was the place to be at the weekend.

We loved all of the stalls but our favourites had to be drawings done by Eimear Brennan. Her delicate fairy influences looked so at home in the Botanic Gardens.

4. Reindeer-shaped Logs

Whoever came up with the idea of using branches to make reindeers was on to a winner. These were everywhere and they looked so cute. Every second person who queued at our stall seemed to have a wooden reindeer tucked under their arms while they waited for their churros.

5. Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind

It wasn’t all arts and crafts though. It was great to see the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind with a stall at the market also. It was even better to watch Sam, their well-behaved ambassador, as he kept a close eye on all the shopping.

We were delighted to be invited to provide food for the shoppers at this beautiful location. Hopefully we will be back again next year too. In the meantime, if you need some churros or crepes for your next event, feel free to contact us.
